MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins center fielder Byron Buxton exited in the second inning of Sunday's 6-4 win over the White Sox with right knee soreness and is considered day to day. He will not travel with the team to Cleveland and will undergo an MRI in Minnesota on Monday morning.
"I think we're a little bit optimistic in that, structurally, it seems fine," said Twins manager Paul Molitor. "There's some fluid in there. If we get a clear report, I think we can get him out there rather quickly, but I don't want to jump to anything until we find out what that MRI shows in the morning."
Buxton suffered the injury while stealing second base after he took a one-out walk from White Sox starter Carlos Rodón. Molitor believes that Buxton didn't slide into second base because of the discomfort in his knee, though Molitor is not sure whether the injury was sustained on the initial surge or as Buxton was slowing down.
"Something prevented him from sliding and I don't think it was because he didn't slide as much as I think he felt something that caused him to pull up," Molitor said.
Despite not being able to slide, Buxton still registered his ninth stolen base of the season.
Buxton remained in the game for three more batters and took third on what appeared to be a dropped throw error by Chicago first baseman Todd Frazier. He then walked gingerly off the base and was evaluated by trainers during the ensuing White Sox challenge and walked off the field without assistance as he exited the game.
Buxton is hitting .199 with one home run, 16 RBIs in 61 games this season. He was replaced in center field by Eddie Rosario, who struck out twice and committed one of Minnesota's four errors.
