Indians receive additional pick for 2016 Draft

MILWAUKEE -- The Indians were rewarded with an additional pick in the 2016 Draft thanks to the fourth annual Competitive Balance Lottery.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced the results of the drawing, during which Cleveland received the second pick in Round B of the Competitive Balance section of the 2016 Draft. That means the Indians will have an extra pick between the second and third rounds of the Draft.

In the 2015 Draft, the second pick of the Competitive Balance B round came in as selection No. 72 overall. The Indians had the sixth pick in the Competitive Balance A Round this summer and used it to draft right-hander Triston McKenzie with the 42nd overall selection.

The Competitive Balance Lottery came to fruition as part of the 2012-16 Basic Agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association, giving teams with the lowest revenues and in the smallest markets the opportunity to obtain extra Draft picks. A club's odds of winning the lottery were based on its winning percentage in the previous season compared to other eligible teams.
