Reds get 1st pick in Competitive Balance Round A

CINCINNATI -- For teams like the Reds who rely heavily on the MLB Draft and developing players within the organization, Wednesday's Competitive Balance Lottery results were a nice boost.

In a drawing conducted in New York, the Reds received the first selection in Competitive Balance Round A, which immediately follows the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

The Competitive Balance Lottery was established in 2012 to give clubs with the lowest revenues and in the smallest markets the opportunity to get additional Draft picks through a lottery. The 10 clubs with the lowest revenues and the 10 clubs in the smallest markets were entered into a lottery for the six selections immediately following the first round of the Draft.

Teams' odds of winning the lottery were based on the 2014 season's winning percentage compared to other eligible clubs in that lottery round.

Here is the order of the lottery picks:

Round A
1. Reds
2. A's
3. Rockies
4. D-backs
5. Marlins
6. Pirates

Round B (Six Draft selections following second round)
1. Padres
2. Indians
3. Twins
4. Brewers
5. Orioles
6. Rays
