Weber (#38) is today's scheduled starting pitcher for the Mariners.
Seattle now has 7 days to trade, release or outright Machi to the minors.
Seattle's Major League, 40-man roster, remains full at 40.
Weber, 26, is 2-0 with a 0.85 ERA (3 ER, 31.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts and 4 walks in 6 games (5 starts) with AAA Tacoma this season. He leads the Pacific Coast League in ERA with a mark of 0.85. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander began the season without allowing a run in his first 3 games (2 starts), scattering 6 hits over 13.2 innings pitched with 8 strikeouts and 0 walks during that span. Weber has posted back-to-back quality starts: May 3 at Las Vegas and May 8 vs. New Orleans. He has allowed just 3 extra-base hits this season, holding left-handed batters to a .098 (4x41) average and right-handed batters to a .229 mark (16x70).
He was outrighted to AAA Tacoma on Dec. 2, 2016 after being claimed off waivers from Atlanta on Nov. 2 of last year. He went 1-1 with a 5.45 ERA (22 ER, 36.1 IP) in 16 games (2 starts) with Atlanta last season, striking out 23 and walking 5. In 26 games (5 starts) with AAA Gwinnett in 2016, Weber was 2-3 with a 2.76 ERA (19 ER, 62.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 14 walks.
The native of St. Petersburg, FL, was drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Petersburg College. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on Sept. 8, 2015 at Philadelphia. In parts of 2 seasons with the Braves, he has compiled a career record of 1-4 with a 5.15 ERA (37 ER, 64.2 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 11 walks in 21 games (7 starts). Over parts of 9 minor league seasons with Atlanta (2009-16) and Seattle (2017), Weber is 35-36 with a 3.64 ERA (271 ER, 669.2 IP) with 481 strikeouts and 110 walks in 209 games (82 starts).
Machi, 35, made 5 relief appearances with the Mariners after being selected from AAA Tacoma on May 2. The 6-foot, 235-pound right-hander went 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER, 7.2 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 5 games with the Mariners. He tossed a season-high 2.0 innings on May 2 vs. the Angels, his first Major League appearance since Oct. 1, 2015 at New York-AL while with the Red Sox. Prior to being selected on May 2, he was 1-0 with 4 saves and a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 8.0 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 8 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma this season.
In 2015, Machi combined to go 2-0 with 4 saves and a 5.12 ERA (33 ER, 58.0 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 22 walks in 59 total relief appearances with San Francisco and Boston. He went 1-0 record with a 5.14 ERA (20 ER, 35.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts and 14 walks in 33 relief appearances with the Giants before being designated for assignment on July 20. He was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on July 28 and went 1-0 with 4 saves and a 5.09 ERA (13 ER, 23.0 IP) with 20 strikeouts and 8 walks in 26 games with Boston. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Giants (2012-15), Red Sox (2015) and Mariners (2017), Machi has a career record of 13-2 with 6 saves and a 3.38 ERA (72 ER, 191.2 IP) with 152 strikeouts and 57 walks in 194 games. The native of El Tigre, Venezuela, originally signed with Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 22, 2000.
