Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that right-handed pitcher Jean Machi has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
 
Machi, 35, was designated for assignment yesterday after making 5 relief appearances with the Mariners after being selected from AAA Tacoma on May 2. The 6-foot, 235-pound right-hander went 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER, 7.2 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 5 games with the Mariners. He tossed a season-high 2.1 innings on May 12 at Toronto, allowing zero earned runs. Prior to being selected on May 2, he was 1-0 with 4 saves and a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 8.0 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 8 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma this season.
 
In 2015, Machi combined to go 2-0 with 4 saves and a 5.12 ERA (33 ER, 58.0 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 22 walks in 59 total relief appearances with San Francisco and Boston. He went 1-0 record with a 5.14 ERA (20 ER, 35.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts and 14 walks in 33 relief appearances with the Giants before being designated for assignment on July 20. He was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on July 28 and went 1-0 with 4 saves and a 5.09 ERA (13 ER, 23.0 IP) with 20 strikeouts and 8 walks in 26 games with Boston. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Giants (2012-15), Red Sox (2015) and Mariners (2017), Machi has a career record of 13-2 with 6 saves and a 3.38 ERA (72 ER, 191.2 IP) with 152 strikeouts and 57 walks in 194 games. The native of El Tigre, Venezuela, originally signed with Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 22, 2000.
