D-Backs select eight players on the second day of MLB's 2017 First-Year Player Draft

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) selected 8 players in Rounds 3-10 of Major League Baseball's 2017 First-Year Player Draft. Overall, the D-backs have selected 8 college players and 3 high school players with 6 infielders, 3 right-handed pitchers and 2 catchers.

Yesterday, the D-backs selected INF Pavin Smith [pronounced "pay-vin"] with the No. 7 pick (First Round), INF Drew Ellis with the No. 44 pick (Round 2) and C Daulton Varsho with the No. 68 pick (Competitive Balance B).

RHP Matt Tabor (Round 3, Pick 82) | B/T: R/R | Age: 18 (7/14/98) | 6-2, 160 | Milton (Mass.) Academy

  • He was the 2017 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, as a senior, after posting a 0.42 ERA (4 ER in 42.0 IP) with 75 strikeouts and 8 walks.
  • He was rated by Baseball America as the No. 51 High School Draft Prospect in the 2017 Draft.
  • He grew from 5-foot-4 as a sophomore to 6-foot-2 his senior year.
  • Committed to attend Elon University (N.C.)
  • For his senior project at Milton Academy, he constructed a miniature replica of Fenway Park and held a whiffle ball tournament that raised $6,750, with proceeds benefitting the Jimmy Fund.

RHP Harrison Francis (Round 4, Pick 112) | B/T: R/R | Age: 18 (10/26/98) | 6-2, 195 | Lawton Chiles (Fla.) HS

  • As a senior at Lawton Chiles High School, in 8 starts, he was 4-3 with a 2.55 ERA (29 R-20 ER in 55.0 IP), .159 opponents average (33-for-208), 27 walks and 83 strikeouts.
  • He was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Third-Team Senior Preseason All-American and Florida Region All-High School Senior First-Team.
  • He has committed to Chipola (Fla.) College…Patrick Corbin played there and had his No. 8 retired in 2015.
  • His mother, Joanna, passed away from breast cancer on June 1, 2014…to honor her legacy, the "Joanna Francis Living Well" foundation was created to help those suffering from terminal breast cancer face each day with courage, help patients and families benefit from financial relief for social services by providing opportunities of support and financial assistance for unforeseen living expenses.

INF Buddy Kennedy (Round 5, Pick 142) | B/T: R/R | Age: 18 (10/5/98) | 6-0, 200 | Millville (N.J.) HS

  • He attended Millville Senior (N.J.) High School, the same school that Mike Trout attended…they frequently workout together in the offseason.
  • He hit .493 with 6 home runs and 24 RBI during his senior year for the Thunderbolts.
  • He is the grandson of 4-time Major League All-Star, Don Money.
  • He was rated by Baseball America as the No. 94 High School Draft Prospect in the 2017 Draft.
  • He committed to the University of North Carolina.

RHP Brian Shaffer (Round 6, Pick 172) | B/T: R/R | Age: 20 (8/12/96) | 6-5, 200 | University of Maryland

  • In 2017, as a junior, he was the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award semifinalist…in 16 starts, he went 7-4 with a 2.66 ERA (38 R-32 ER in 108.1 IP), a .223 opponents average (88-for-394), 18 walks and 109 strikeouts.
  • In 2016, as a sophomore, he was named All-Big Ten Third-Team and Big Ten All-Tournament Team…in 15 starts, he went 8-3 with a 2.60 ERA (33 R-30 ER in 103.2 IP), a .209 opponents average (78-for-373), 13 walks and 75 strikeouts.
  • As a freshman in 2015, he pitched in 16 games (11 starts) and went 5-1 with 1 save.

INF Jose Caballero (Round 7, Pick 202) | B/T: S/R | Age: 20 (8/30/96) | 5-11, 175 | Chipola (Fla.) College

  • He is a native of Panama City, Panama.
  • His Chipola (Fla.) College team won the Junior College World Series as he was named the tournament MVP after hitting .448 (13-for-29) with 5 homers and 16 RBI.
  • In 2017 for the Chipola Indians, he hit .401 (81-for-202) with 15 home runs, 63 RBI and 22 stolen bases.
  • He attended Chipola (Fla.) College…Patrick Corbin played there and had his No. 8 retired in 2015.

C Tim Susnara (Round 8, Pick 232) | B/T: L/R | Age: 21 (4/17/96) | 6-1, 195 | University of Oregon

  • During his junior year for the Ducks, he hit .248 (39-for-157) with 5 home runs and 17 RBI and threw out 50.0 percent of would-be base stealers.
  • He posted a .992 fielding percentage over 3 seasons at Oregon.
  • He attended Saint Francis (Calif.) High School, the alma mater of Daniel Descalso.

INF Camden Duzenack (Round 9, Pick 262) | B/T: R/R | Age: 22 (3/8/95) | 5-9, 170 | Dallas Baptist University

  • He is the all-time winningest player in Dallas Baptist's history, going 170-76 (.691) in his 4 seasons.
