Astros sign 15 players from 2017 MLB Draft class

The Houston Astros have signed 15 additional players who were selected in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft, including second baseman J.J. Matijevic (Competitive Balance Round B), right-handed pitcher Peter Solomon (4th round) and left-handed pitcher Parker Mushinski (7th round).

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have signed 15 additional players who were selected in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft, including second baseman J.J. Matijevic (Competitive Balance Round B), right-handed pitcher Peter Solomon (4th round) and left-handed pitcher Parker Mushinski (7th round). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The official announcement was made by Astros Assistant General Manager of Scouting and Player Development Mike Elias.
Matijevic, 21, was one of the premier college hitters in the country this year, as he led the nation with 30 doubles as a junior at the University of Arizona. He also led the Pac-12 Conference in batting average (.383), slugging percentage (.633), hits (92) and RBI (65), adding 10 homers and a .436 on-base percentage in 59 games. The left-handed hitter was rated as one of the 15 best college position players in this year's draft class by Baseball America.
The Astros also signed center fielder Carlos Diaz (14th round), third baseman Adrian Tovalin (16th round), right-handed pitcher Matt Ruppenthal (17th round), first baseman Roman Garcia (19th round), right fielder Chas McCormick (21st round), third baseman Richard Slenker (28th round), shortstop Cody Bohanek (30th round), left-handed pitcher Cole Watts (31st round), catcher Martin Figueroa (32nd round), left-handed pitcher Noel Pinto (34th round), right-handed pitcher Matthew Merrill (37th round) and third baseman Colton Shaver (39th round).
Additionally, the Astros signed two non-drafted free agents in left-handed pitcher Austin Kerns (University of Oklahoma) and right-handed pitcher Chauncey Nunez (Doral Academy). 
Houston has now signed 25 of its 42 selections from the 2017 draft, including seven of their 12 selections made within the top 10 rounds.
Major League Baseball's deadline to sign drafted players is July 7 at 4:00 p.m. CT.
