The Red Sox will celebrate kids during the upcoming homestand against the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park as part of Major League Baseball's "Play Ball!" initiative created to inspire youth to play baseball.
Starting Saturday, June 23, through Thursday, June 29, kids will be celebrated at Fenway Park and in the community. The seven-day celebration will launch tomorrow, when the Red Sox will visit the Miracle League of Massachusetts in Acton from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The club will hand out Play Ball! t-shirts and plastic bat and ball sets to Miracle League players, provide lunch, and a festive atmosphere with a DJ, the 2013 World Series trophy, Wally and Tessie, and virtual reality stations. Media are invited to attend the Miracle League visit, located at 75 Quarry Road, Acton, MA.
Throughout the homestand, the Red Sox will hand out plastic bat and ball sets to select Kid Nation members attending those games. Children will also be randomly chosen to be honorary bat kids, say "play ball" during the pregame ceremonies, and invited to participate in the 7th inning stretch alongside Wally. Additionally, Wally and Tessie will visit kids in their seats during the games and surprise them with Play Ball! starter kits, which include a plastic bat and ball, eye black, and other items that encourage kids to play the game.
"Play Ball!" week at Fenway Park is part of a broader effort by the Red Sox designed to bring children and young adults closer to the game. The club's "Calling All Kids" initiative includes free tickets to games for fans 14 and under, $9 tickets for high school and college students, a mobile truck experience that brings elements of the ballpark out to the community, and a dedicated area for children in the Kids Concourse at Fenway Park activated with kid-friendly games, food, and entertainment.
