Mariners recall right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagan

· Sam Gaviglio, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma (post-game July 6).

Pagan (#54) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Oakland Athletics.

Pagan, 26, has allowed just 1 hit and 0 runs in his last 2 MLB outings covering 8.0 total innings. He tossed 4.0 shutout innings May 23 at Washington (1 H, 4 K) and 4.0 scoreless innings June 11 vs. Toronto (0 H, career-high 5 strikeouts). Overall, in 3 stints with Seattle this season (May 2-6, May 22-24, June 10-11), the 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA (5 ER, 10.2 IP) with 11 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 games. Pagan made his Major League debut on May 3 vs. the Angels.

In his last 8 games in Tacoma (since being optioned June 12), Pagan was 1-0 with 3 saves and a perfect 0.00 ERA (7.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 9 K). Overall, he's 2-1 with 5 saves and a 2.56 ERA (9 ER, 31.2 IP) with 36 strikeouts and 8 walks in 23 games with the Rainiers this season. The native of Greenville, SC, was originally selected by the Mariners in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Gaviglio (pronounced "Guh-VEE-leo"), 27, is 3-4, 4.31 in 11 games, 10 starts, with Seattle this season. The Mariners are 6-4 in his 10 starts, and he pitched at least 5.0 innings in 9 of the 10 starts. His 4.31 ERA is fourth-best among all MLB rookie pitchers (min: 50.0 IP). He made his MLB debut on May 11, at Toronto in relief, and moved into the Mariners starting rotation on May 18 and allowed 3 ER or less in 7 of his 10 starts. He collected his first MLB win (and hit) May 29 at Colorado.

Prior to his recall, he was 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA (12 ER, 32.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 starts with AAA Tacoma this season. He tossed a 7.0-inning complete game in his 2017 debut, April 13 vs. El Paso, taking the loss despite allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 7. Gaviglio made 1 start with Team Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, taking a no-decision after allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2 on March 11 vs. Team Venezuela.

Gaviglio was acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly on Nov. 20, 2014. The native of Ashland, Ore., has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons in the Cardinals (2011-14) and Mariners (2015-17) organizations, compiling a 36-39 record with a 4.01 ERA (278 ER, 624.1 IP) with 501 strikeouts and 164 walks. He was selected by Tampa Bay in the 40th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. After playing 3 seasons at Oregon State University, Gaviglio was selected by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2011 Draft.
