Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
·         Shawn O'Malley, INF/OF, returned from rehab assignment, activated from the 60-day DL and optioned to AAA Tacoma.
·         Christian Bergman, RHP, outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
The Mariners Major League, 40-man roster, remains full at 40 players.
O'Malley, 29, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on March 31 while recovering from surgery to remove his appendix and transferred to the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis on May 2. He hit .311 (14x45) with 12 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 13 walks and 1 stolen base in 14 game combined on rehabilitation assignment with Rookie AZL Mariners (7/7-11 & 7/20-23), AA Arkansas (7/24-8/2) and AAA Tacoma (8/3). O'Malley went 2-for-4 with 1 runs scored and 2 RBI last night with the Rainiers.
O'Malley hit .229 (48x210) with 24 runs, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 17 RBI in 89 games with the Mariners last season. Prior to being recalled by Seattle on May 15, he hit .317 (27x82) with 15 runs, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, and 13 RBI in 25 games with AAA Tacoma. O'Malley signed with the Mariners as a free agent on Jan. 22, 2015. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Angels (2014) and Mariners (2015-current), he is a career .231 (62x268) hitter with 37 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 25 RBI in 124 career games. The native of Richland, Wash., was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 5th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Southridge High School (Kennewick, WA).
Bergman, 29, has spent the majority of the season with AAA Tacoma, but also appeared in 9 game, 5 starts with Seattle (May 7-June 20). In 13 starts with Tacoma this season, he is 8-3 with a 5.10 ERA (41 ER, 72.1 IP). He has held opponents to a .289 (85x294) average, while walking 16 and striking out 54. He won his first 7 decisions with the Rainiers, going 7-0 with a 2.91 ERA (17 ER, 52.2 IP) over 9 starts (4/11-7/9). Bergman went 4-4 with a 5.44 ERA (28 ER, 46.1 IP) in 9 appearances with Seattle. He signed with Seattle as a minor league free on Dec. 1, 2016 after spending the previous seven seasons in the Colorado organization.
In 4 Major League seasons with Colorado and Seattle, he is 11-13 with a 5.71 ERA (123 ER, 194.0 IP) with 120 strikeouts in 64 games, including 23 starts. In parts of 8 minor league seasons with the Rockies and Mariners organizations, he is 48-33 with a 3.78 ERA (336 ER, 709.2 IP) with 135 walks and 495 strikeouts in 125 games, including 116 starts. He was selected by Colorado in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California, Irvine
