Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced tonight that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Miguel González from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league infielder Ti'Quan Forbes.
To make room for González on the 40-man roster, RHP Anthony Bass has been designated for assignment. González can be added to the active roster as early as Friday, when rosters expand to as many as 40 players.
"Miguel is an experienced starter to help us down the stretch," said President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jon Daniels. "He's been throwing very well the last couple of months and gives us a veteran to bolster our staff in the wild card race."
González, 33, is 7-10 with a 4.31 ERA in 22 starts with the White Sox this season (133.2 IP, 145 H, 72 R, 64 ER, 47 BB, 85 SO, 16 HR). The right-hander is tied for Chicago's team lead in wins, ranks second in starts and strikeouts, and is third in strikeouts.
González started this afternoon at Minnesota and had no decision in the Twins' 5-4 win (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R-ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 110 pitches). The right-hander is 2-0, 1.85 (7 ER/34.0 IP) over his last five starts with the White Sox, holding opponents to a .219 batting average. He has worked at least 6.0 innings in eight of his last nine starts. González was on the disabled list from June 18-July 14 with right shoulder inflammation.
Signed as free agent by Chicago in April 2016, González is 51-51, 3.88 (366 ER/849.0 IP) in 147 games/141 starts in his big league career with Baltimore (2012-15) and Chicago (2016-17). He established career bests for wins (11), starts (28), innings (171.1), and strikeouts (120) with the Orioles in 2013. González has also played in the Angels and Red Sox organizations.
Forbes has combined to bat .234 with 11 homers and 45 RBI in 130 games between Low-A Hickory and High-A Down East in 2017, seeing the majority of his action at third base. The right-handed batting Forbes was promoted to Down East on July 5 and is hitting .221 in 50 games with the Wood Ducks.
Bass is 3-5, 4.16 in 21 games/14 starts between the Rookie Arizona Rangers (3 G/2 GS) and Triple-A Round Rock (18 G/12 GS) in 2017. He allowed nine runs in 5.2 innings over two appearances in his two stints with Texas this season (April 20-28; May 3-4). The Rangers have ten days to trade, release, or outright Bass. The team's major league roster remains at 40 players.
