The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitchers Austin Adams and Erick Fedde from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, returned from rehab and reinstated left-handed pitcher Enny Romero from the 10-day disabled list, reinstated right-handed pitcher Ryan Madson from the 10-day disabled list, and recalled catcher Raudy Read from Double-A Harrisburg. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Adams, 26, returns to the Nationals for the second Major League assignment of his career. Adams went 6-2 with five saves and a 2.14 ERA (14 ER/59.0 IP) in 44 games for Triple-A Syracuse in 2017. He struck out 91 batters in 59.0 IP (striking out 13.0 batters per nine innings), held opponents to a .199 average and surrendered just two home runs. Adams tossed more than one inning in 21 of his 44 outings. He comes to the Nationals on the heels of 9.1 consecutive scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts and two walks in his final seven games with Triple-A.
Fedde, 24, joins the Nationals for the fourth time this season. Fedde was most recently with the Major League club on Sunday, serving as the 26^th man for the Nationals' day-night doubleheader against the New York Mets. The Nationals' No. 2 prospect entering the season, Fedde is 4-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 29 games (13 starts) in the Minor Leagues this season. In three Major League starts, Fedde is 0-1 with a 9.39 ERA.
Madson, 37, rejoins the Nationals after missing 17 games with a right finger sprain. The veteran right-hander ranks fourth among Major League relievers in WHIP (0.77) and sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.43). Since joining the Nationals in a July 16 trade with the Oakland Athletics, Madson is 2-0, has not allowed an earned run in nine appearances (9.0 IP), struck out 13 and walked just one.
Read, 23, joins the Nationals for the first Major League assignment of his career. The athletic backstop hit .265 with 25 doubles, one triple, 17 home runs, 61 RBI, 27 walks, two stolen bases, and 44 runs scored in a career-high 108 games with Harrisburg this season. A 2017 mid-season Eastern League All-Star, Read's .455 slugging percentage ranked third among Eastern League catchers.
Romero, 26, returns to the Nationals after missing 27 games with a left forearm strain. He appeared in seven rehab games with Triple-A Syracuse, going 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA (3 ER/6.1 IP). He struck out eight batters while issuing just one walk. Prior to his stint on the disabled list, Romero posted a 3.99 ERA (21 ER/47.1 IP) while striking out 57 batters with the Nationals.
