Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipotoannounced today the following roster moves:
·         Dan Altavilla, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
·         Jarrod Dyson, OF, reinstated from the 10-day disabled list.
·         Ryan Garton, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
·         Mike Leake, RHP, added to the active roster. 
·         Mike Marjama, C, selected from AAA Tacoma.
·         Andrew Moore, RHP recalled from AAA Tacoma.
·         Shae Simmons, RHP, returned from rehab and reinstated from the 60-day DL.
·         David Phelps, RHP, placed on the 10-day disabled list (retro to 8/31) with right elbow posterior impingement.
·         Christian Bergman, RHP, outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
·         Sam Gaviglio, RHP, claimed off waivers by Kansas City.
Dyson (#1), Simmons (#59), Leake (#8), Altavilla (#53), Garton (#45), Moore (#48) and Marjama (#28) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 p.m.) homestand opener vs. the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field.
Leake is scheduled to start tonight's game for the Mariners.
Marjama will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.
Altavilla, 24 (25 on Sept. 8), was 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA (20 ER, 34.2 IP) with 40 strikeouts in 31 relief appearances with Seattle in four prior stints (April 3-21, May 6-10, May 14-July 3 & Aug. 22-27). In his last 15 appearances, he has a 4.12 ERA (9 ER, 19.2 IP) with 22 strikeouts since May 26. He earned his first career Major League win on April 6 at Houston. He is 1-0 with 6 saves and a 1.61 ERA (4 ER, 22.1 IP) in 19 games with Tacoma, including posting a 1-0 mark with 6 saves and a 1.08 ERA (2 ER, 16.2 IP) in 15 games with Tacoma July 3-Aug. 21.
The native of McKeesport, PA, made his Major League debut with Seattle last season on Aug. 27 at Chicago - AL. He did not allow a run in 15 games (12.1 IP) with the Mariners while striking out 10 and walking 1. In parts of 4 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he is 19-18 with 22 saves and a 3.53 ERA (115 ER, 293.1 IP) with 298 strikeouts and 121 walks. He was originally drafted by Seattle in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Mercyhurst (PA) College.
Dyson, 33, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain on Aug. 19 (retroactive to Aug. 17). In 109 games with the Mariners this season, he is batting .255 (87x341) with 56 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 30 RBI and 28 stolen bases. His 28 steals rank T3^rd in the American League. In his last 64 games (5/27-c), he is batting .289 (58x201) with 32 runs, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 19 RBI and 15 steals. He has tallied 15 Defensive Runs Saved, 5^th-most in the A.L. behind Boston's Mookie Betts (29), Minnesota's Byron Buxton (24) and Toronto's Kevin Pillar (16).
In parts of eight Major League seasons with Kansas City (2010-16) and Seattle (2017), he is a career .259 (442x1706) hitter with 267 runs, 61 doubles, 32 triples, 12 home runs, 131 RBI and 204 stolen bases in 659 career games. He was acquired by Seattle from the Royals on Jan. 6, 2017 in exchange for RHP Nathan Karns. He was originally drafted by Kansas City in the 50^th round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, MS.
Garton, 27, was 2-2 with 4 saves and a 2.80 ERA (14 ER, 45.0 IP) with 61 strikeouts with AAA Durham and AAA Tacoma. With the Rainiers, he was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA (8 ER, 12.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts in 7 relief appearances. He made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2016. In parts of two big league seasons (2016-2017) he is 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1 save in 44 games, all in relief. This season, he has had three stints with the Rays (April 22-30, May 24-28 and May 31-June 10) and has appeared in a total of 7 games. He is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA (10 ER, 10.1 IP).
This season with AAA Durham, Garton went 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA (6 ER, 33.0 IP) and 4 saves in 24 games, including 1 start, limiting opposing hitters to a .162 batting average against and allowed just 18 hits in 33.0 innings while striking out 46 and walking just 16. In his minor league career since being drafted by Tampa Bay in the 34^th round of the 2012 Draft out of Florida Atlantic, Garton has posted a 26-8, 2.77 (93 ER, 302.1 IP) mark with 25 saves. He's struck out better than 1 batter per inning pitched, notching 307 strikeouts in 302.1 innings.
Leake, 29, was acquired by Seattle from St. Louis along with cash considerations and international slot money in exchange for minor league infielder Rayder Ascanio on Wednesday (Aug. 30). He went 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA (72 ER, 154.0 IP) with 103 strikeouts in 26 starts for St. Louis this season. He began the season going 6-6 with a 2.97 ERA (35 ER, 106.0 IP) with 72 strikeouts in his first 16 starts, before going 1-6 with a 6.94 ERA (37 ER, 48.0 IP) with 31 strikeouts over his last 10 starts.
Since his Major League debut season in 2010, his 228 starts are the 2^nd-most in the National League behind Los Angeles-NL's Clayton Kershaw (233). Since the start of the 2012 season, his 180 starts are tied for the most in the National League with Washington's Gio Gonzalez. He's one of eight Major League pitchers to make at least 30 starts in every season since 2012 and has a chance to do so again this season.
In eight Major League seasons, he is 80-76 with a 4.18 ERA (631 ER, 1414.1 IP) with 958 strikeouts in 233 games, including 228 starts for Cincinnati (2010-15), San Francisco (2015) and St. Louis (2016-17). He was drafted by Cincinnati in the 1^st round (8^th overall) of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University in Tempe.
Garton, 27, was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA (8 ER, 12.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts in 7 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma after being acquired from Tampa Bay on Aug. 6. He made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2016. In parts of two big league seasons (2016-2017) he is 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1 save in 44 games, all in relief. This season, he has had three stints with the Rays (April 22-30, May 24-28 and May 31-June 10) and has appeared in a total of 7 games. He is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA (10 ER, 10.1 IP).
This season with AAA Durham, Garton is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA (6 ER, 33.0 IP) and 4 saves in 24 games, including 1 start. In his minor league career since being drafted by Tampa Bay in the 34^th round of the 2012 Draft out of Florida Atlantic, Garton has posted a 26-8, 2.78 (93 ER, 301.1 IP) mark with 25 saves while striking out 305 batters.
Marjama, 28, was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Ryan Garton from Tampa Bay in exchange for LHP Anthony Misiewicz and INF Luis Rengifo on Aug. 6. Since being acquired by Seattle, he has hit .169 (13x77) with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 21 games with AAA Tacoma. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound catcher began the season in the Rays organization with AAA Durham, where he hit .274 (72x263) with 32 runs, 16 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs and 51 RBI in 72 games.
The native of Roseville, Calif., was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23^rd round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University. He was acquired by the Rays from the White Sox in a minor league trade on January 23, 2015. In parts of seven minor league seasons in the White Sox (2011-14), Rays (2015-17) and Mariners (2017-c) organizations, he is a career .275 (490x1782) hitter with 211 runs, 112 doubles, 12 triples, 37 home runs and 240 RBI in 480 career games.
Moore, 23, appeared in 4 games, including 3 starts with AAA Tacoma since being optioned to the Rainiers on Aug. 12. During that span, he was 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA (4 ER, 14.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts and 3 walks. Overall, he is 3-4 with a 3.48 ERA (29 ER, 75.0 IP) with 66 strikeouts and 13 walks in 15 games, including 14 starts with the Rainiers this season. The 6-foot, 195-pound right-hander is appearing in his 4^th stint with the Mariners this season (also: 6/21-23, 7/3-28 and 8/11-12). He earned the win in his Major League debut on June 22 vs. Detroit, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits (1 home run) while striking out 4 over 7.0 innings pitched. Overall, he is 1-3 with a 6.34 ERA (27 ER, 38.1 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 5 walks in 7 games (6 starts) with the Mariners this season. He began the season with AA Arkansas where he was 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA (8 ER, 34.2 IP) with 33 strikeouts and 9 walks in 6 games (5 starts) before being promoted to Tacoma on May 8.
In 2016, Moore was named the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Mariners after combining for a record of 12-4 with a 2.65 ERA (48 ER, 163.0 IP) with 133 strikeouts and 31 walks in 28 starts between advanced-A Bakersfield and AA Jackson. He was selected by Seattle in the 2^nd round (72^nd overall) of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University. In 3 minor league seasons in the Seattle organization (2015-17), he is 17-11 with a 2.71 ERA (94 ER, 311.2 IP) with 275 strikeouts and 55 walks in 63 games (55 starts).
Simmons, 26 (turns 27 on Sept. 3), has made appearances with the AZL Mariners, AA Arkansas and AAA Tacoma while on a rehab assignment. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow strain on March 31 before being transferred to the 60-day DL on May 7. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound right-hander began his rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners on July 6, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning in relief while striking out 2. He went on to make 3 relief appearances with AA Arkansas, allowing 3 runs over 2.2 innings (10.12 ERA) on 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. Since joining AAA Tacoma on Aug. 4, he has posted a 3.68 ERA (3 ER, 7.1 IP) with 6 strikeouts and 6 walks in 9 outings.
The native of Cape Girardeau, Mo., was acquired by Seattle along with OF Mallex Smith from Atlanta in exchange for LHP Luiz Gohara and LHP Thomas Burrows on Jan. 11. Last season, he made 7 relief appearances with the Braves, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing just 1 run (1.35 ERA) on 6 hits while striking out 3. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list while recovering from "Tommy John" right elbow surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews on Feb. 12, 2015. As part of his rehabilitation, Simmons made 3 starts with the Braves Rookie Gulf Coast League team (0-0, 6.00 in 3.0 innings pitched), pitched in 4 games (3 GS) with A Rome (0-0, 8.10 in 3.1 innings pitched) and made 12 appearances (4 GS) with AAA Gwinnett, compiling an 0-0 record with 1 save and a 1.50 ERA in 12.0 innings.
Simmons was originally drafted in the 22^nd round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Atlanta out of Southeast Missouri State. He has compiled a record of 1-2 with 1 save and a 2.54 ERA (8 ER, 28.1 IP) in 33 career Major League appearances. In parts of five minor league seasons in the Braves (2012-16) and Mariners (2017-c) organizations, he is 3-4 with 41 saves and a 2.06 ERA (30 ER, 131.1 IP) with 184 strikeouts and 65 walks in 120 career appearances (14 starts).
Phelps, 30, is making his second trip to the disabled list since joining Seattle. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an impingement in his right elbow on August 8 (retroactive to 8/7) to Aug. 23. Since being acquired by the Mariners (7/20-c), he is 2-1 with 3 holds and a 3.12 ERA (3 ER, 8.2 IP) in 10 relief appearances with 11 strikeouts and five walks. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound right-hander was acquired on July 20 in a 5-player deal that sent minor leaguer outfielder Brayan Hernandez and minor league right-handed pitchers Pablo Lopez, Brandon Miller and Lukas Schiraldi to Miami. Overall, he is 4-5 with 21 holds and a 3.40 ERA (21 ER, 55.2 IP) with 62 strikeouts and 26 walks in 54 combined appearances with the Mariners and Marlins this season. At the time of his first DL placement (8/8), he ranked 2^nd among Major League relievers in holds (21) and T15^th in innings pitched (54.0).
In 2016, Phelps posted career-bests in wins (7), saves (4), strikeouts (114), ERA (2.28), opponents average against (.197) and holds (25). Overall, he was 7-6 with 4 saves and a 2.28 ERA (22 ER, 86.2 IP) with 114 strikeouts and 38 walks in 64 games with Miami. Over parts of 6 Major League seasons with the Yankees (2012-14), Marlins (2015-17) and Mariners (2017), he is 30-33 with 5 saves and a 3.89 ERA (239 ER, 553.2 IP) with 520 strikeouts and 216 walks in 228 career games (64 starts).
Bergman, 29, was 4-5 with a 5.00 ERA (30 ER, 54.0 IP) with 33 strikeouts in 13 games, including 8 starts during three stints with Seattle this season (May 7-June 20, Aug. 12-13 & Aug. 28-Sept. 1). As a reliever, he was 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA (3 ER, 11.1 IP) with 5 strikeouts in 5 relief appearances. As a starter, he was 4-4 with a 5.70 ERA (27 ER, 42.2 IP) with 28 strikeouts in 8 starts.
In 16 starts with AAA Tacoma, Bergman is 9-4 with a 5.34 ERA (51 ER, 86.0 IP) with 63 strikeouts and 18 walks. In four Major League seasons with Colorado (2014-16) and Seattle (2017), he is 11-14 with a 5.58 ERA (125 ER, 201.2 IP) with 123 strikeouts in 68 games (23 starts). He was selected by Colorado in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB Draft.
Gaviglio ("Guh-VEE-leo"), 27, was recalled from AAA Tacoma on Aug. 15 but did not appear with the Mariners during that span. In 12 games (11 starts) over 3 stints (5/10-7/6, 7/18-20 and 8/15-19) with Seattle this season, he was 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA (32 ER, 62.1 IP) with 40 strikeouts and 21 walks. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right hander is 3-6 with a 3.97 ERA (30 ER, 68.0 IP) with 54 strikeouts and 12 walks in 12 starts with AAA Tacoma.   
Gaviglio was acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly on Nov. 20, 2014. The native of Ashland, Ore., has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons in the Cardinals (2011-14) and Mariners (2015-17) organizations, compiling a 37-42 record with a 4.04 ERA (296 ER, 660.0 IP) with 539 strikeouts and 173 walks.
