In recognition of childhood cancer awareness month in September, for the third straight year the Red Sox will celebrate children who have battled the disease in pregame ceremonies before today's 7:10 p.m. Red Sox-Athletics game at Fenway Park.
Over three hundred children and their adult caregivers will form a human gold ribbon in centerfield during the ceremony. Additionally, children who are battling cancer or have overcome the disease will take part in other pregame elements, including honorary bat boy and girl, the ceremonial first pitch, and saying "play ball."
The Red Sox began hosting a day at Fenway Park dedicated to childhood cancer in 2015. The following year, Major League Baseball began a league-wide effort in partnership with Stand Up To Cancer declaring September 1 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Day" across all 30 clubs.
