Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras has received a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his inappropriate actions -- which included the throwing of his mask, which contacted Umpire Jordan Baker -- in the top of the fifth inning of Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.
In addition, Cubs pitcher John Lackey has received an undisclosed fine for his inappropriate actions in the fifth inning.
The suspension of Contreras had been scheduled to begin this afternoon, when the Cubs are to continue their series with the Cardinals. However, Contreras has elected to appeal. Thus, the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
