Villanueva honored by Toronto baseball writers

Blue Jays right-hander Carlos Villanueva has been named the Honda Player of the Month for July by the Toronto chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Villanueva was a perfect 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts last month, holding opponents to a .183 average. It is the first monthly honor for the 28-year-old Villanueva.

First baseman Edwin Encarnacion -- who hit .308 with six home runs and 17 RBIs -- earned the two other first-place votes, while catcher J.P. Arencibia (.321, six homers, 13 RBIs) and lefty Darren Oliver (0.87 ERA) also were considered.
