D-backs claim Ransom off waivers

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers claimed Cody Ransom off waivers from the D-backs in May, and on Friday, the D-backs claimed him back.

Ransom packed his bags and departed Miller Park, leaving the Brewers to play a man short for their series opener against the Pirates. Ransom batted .196 with 79 strikeouts in 168 Brewers at-bats but played solid defense at shortstop and third base.

The Brewers are covered at shortstop with youngsters Jean Segura and Jeff Bianchi. They promoted infielder Eric Farris from Triple-A Nashville late Friday night, and Farris will be in uniform against the Pirates on Saturday.

With Ransom's departure, the Brewers have three openings on the 40-man roster for additional September callups. The team will probably wait until after Triple-A Nashville's season finale on Monday to make the bulk of its moves, Roenicke said.

"We'll see how the games go," Roenicke said.
