Short hops

• Andrew Cashner, who missed 51 games with a strained right lat muscle, will start Friday against the D-backs at Petco Park. Oddly enough, the injury occurred during a start against the D-backs on July 3. With Cashner starting, the Padres will use a six-man rotation. With four off-days this month, this will give the rest of the starters an additional day of rest. Cashner was 3-3 and had a 3.44 ERA before his injury, with a 2.53 ERA in three starts after moving into the rotation.

• The team will add pitcher Anthony Bass to the roster on Tuesday. Bass allowed three earned runs in three innings of a Minor League rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Tucson. He will slide into the bullpen, said Padres manager Bud Black. Brad Boxberger, a reliever, will also join the team.
