• Injured reliever Robbie Ross has been cleared to begin throwing -- possibly on Friday -- as he recovers from a left forearm strain. The left-hander went on the disabled list last Saturday. Prior to the injury, Ross was 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 52 relief appearances.

"We're going to play it by ear, see how it goes, day to day," Ross said. "It feels good, we're just taking it easy. I've still got a few more days on the DL. We're going to wait that out."

• Rangers affiliates in Frisco and Myrtle Beach won the first games of their respective postseason series on Wednesday night. The Double-A Frisco RoughRiders won Game 1 of their best-of-five set against Corpus Christi, 6-5, on a walk-off double. The Class A Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated Winston-Salem, 4-1, in their best-of-three series.

• Outfielder Jairo Beras will be among 61 players attending instructional league. He is still on a one-year suspension for misrepresenting his age before signing with the Rangers, but is eligible to participate in instructional games. The season runs from Sep. 19 to Oct. 13.

• The Rangers released left-handed pitcher Miguel de Los Santos on Thursday after he was designated for assignment on Aug. 31.

• Mitch Moreland celebrated his 27th birthday on Thursday.
