tin Verlander's impressive September not only helped the Tigers clinch their second consecutive American League Central title, it also earned the right-hander another honor.
Verlander was named AL Pitcher of the Month for September on Tuesday, capping the regular season by going 5-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his final six starts.
Verlander, who is in contention to win his second straight AL Cy Young Award, led the league in wins and ERA (minimum 26 innings) and tied for first with 41 strikeouts. His 42 innings also ranked second in September.
The righty beat the White Sox on Sept. 2 by tossing eight innings of one-run ball and followed his lone loss of the month (to the Angels) by throwing seven shutout innings against the Indians on Sept. 14.
Verlander ended his regular season Saturday by allowing one unearned run and striking out eight against the Twins.
Verlander's teammate, righty Max Scherzer, was also considered for the award after going 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA and striking out 33 in September.
