TIMORE -- The Orioles made four changes to their 25-man roster for the American League Division Series, the club announced prior to Sunday's Game 1 against the Yankees.
For the best-of-five series, the Orioles will carry 12 pitchers and 13 position players, a change from the 11-14 split they had for the Wild Card game against Texas. Infielder Omar Quintanilla was dropped in order to make room for the 12th pitcher.
The O's also made a significant overhaul to their pitching staff from the Wild Card game, removing three pitchers who had been available in relief against the Rangers and adding four starters in the Division Series.
Added were Jason Hammel, Wei-Yin Chen and Miguel Gonzalez, who are expected to start Games 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Chris Tillman, who was also added, could be a candidate to make a start later in the series. Manager Buck Showalter said Tillman, Gonzalez and lefty Joe Saunders will be available out of the bullpen in Game 1.
Removed from the roster were pitchers Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton and Steve Johnson. Britton was sent to the Minor League facility in Sarasota, Fla., to continue pitching, in case he is needed later in this series or beyond. He is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday. Outfielder Xavier Avery will work out in Sarasota as a roster standby.
If Hammel, who is dealing with knee problems, were to suffer another injury on Sunday, the club could fill his roster spot only with another pitcher.
"Every one of those guys, as I told them today, has to have the mindset that they're playing tomorrow, because they could be," Showalter said. "They could be playing tomorrow."
The full 25-man roster is as follows:
Infielders/outfielders/designated hitters: Robert Andino, Endy Chavez, Chris Davis, Ryan Flaherty, Lew Ford, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Nate McLouth, Mark Reynolds, Jim Thome.
Catchers: Taylor Teagarden, Matt Wieters.
Pitchers: Luis Ayala, Chen, Gonzalez, Hammel, Tommy Hunter, Jim Johnson, Brian Matusz, Darren O'Day, Troy Patton, Joe Saunders, Pedro Strop, Tillman.
