Worth noting

• Though Washington's Game 3 starter Edwin Jackson was available, if needed, in relief on Friday, St. Louis wasn't putting Chris Carpenter in the same spot. With this being two days after his start, Friday would normally be the day Carpenter would throw a side session. Even still, manager Mike Matheny said Carpenter would not be an option out of the 'pen.

"It's just, he's put his arm through quite a lot this season and I just don't think it's a good idea," Matheny said.

Carpenter has made only four starts since leading the Cards to a win in Game 7 of the World Series last October.

• General manager John Mozeliak said the club still does not anticipate that Rafael Furcal will need to undergo elbow surgery to address a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Furcal is on schedule to begin a throwing program in early- to mid-November. He has not thrown since suffering the injury while making a throw at Nationals Park on Aug. 30.
