Liriano homers, plates three for Peoria

Rymer Liriano likes to hit the fastball. He expresses this thought in his second language as if it was his first.

But he can hit the off-speed stuff, too.

The top-ranked Padres prospect smacked his third Arizona Fall League home run and collected three more RBIs on Friday afternoon in the Peoria Javelinas' 7-5 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox.

"He threw me a fastball away, but I was waiting for a changeup," said Liriano, 21, of starter Mike Wright's 2-1 offering. "I connected with it."

Batting cleanup, the right fielder hit a two-run blast during the Javelinas' five-run third inning rally. Fourth-ranked Mariners prospect Mike Zunino also went deep in the frame.

Liriano, a free-agent signee out of his native Dominican Republic in 2007, excelled in his fifth pro season this year. In 127 games split between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio, he batted .280 while racking up 44 extra-base hits, 61 RBIs and 32 steals.

With three more hits on Friday -- he also singled in a run in the fourth and singled again in the sixth -- Liriano lifted his Fall League batting average to .327. He said he is focusing much of his energy on his outfield defense, particularly his throwing.

For the Solar Sox, first baseman Aaron Westlake (Tigers) went deep, while top-ranked Tigers prospect Nick Castellanos singled three times in four at-bats.

Solar Sox starter Mike Wright (0-4) (Orioles) was charged with five runs -- two earned -- on six hits over three innings.

Javelinas starter Kyle Simon (2-2) (Phillies) yielded three runs on six hits over three frames. He stuck out three.

Mesa manager Rodney Linares and his designated hitter Joc Pederson (Dodgers) were ejected in the sixth inning, not long after Pederson was caught attempting to steal second base.

The Solar Sox fell to 5-15, while the Javelinas moved to a league-best 13-9 heading into Saturday's Rising Stars Game.
