HOUSTON -- Brandon Barnes came into the game at center field at the start of the fifth inning on Tuesday, replacing Justin Maxwell, who was taken out of the game for an X-ray on his left hand.

Maxwell was hit in the left hand by a pitch from Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma in the third inning with the bases loaded, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead.

Maxwell was hit in the left hand by a pitch from Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma in the third inning with the bases loaded, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead.

It didn't take long for Barnes to make his presence known. Endy Chavez led off the inning against Bud Norris with a deep fly ball to center. Barnes ran back to the ball and made a running catch at the warning track in front of Tal's Hill.

Barnes ended the fifth inning with another fine catch. Running down a deep fly ball to left-center by Justin Smoak, who singled in his first two at-bats, for the third out with runners on first and second.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barnes got an infield single off Iwakuma.
