Lineup breakdown: Cards vs. Dodgers, NLCS Game 4

LOS ANGELES -- A look at Tuesday's starting lineups for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series between the Cardinals and the Dodgers:

View Full Game Coverage

Results from the first three games almost necessitated that the Cardinals shuffle their lineup a bit for Game 4 of the NLCS. They are hitting just .134 with only 13 hits through three games.

Daniel Descalso enters the fray at shortstop, replacing Pete Kozma -- clearly an offensive-minded move. Manager Mike Matheny also re-inserted Matt Adams into the cleanup spot and moved Jon Jay up to No. 6 -- as he often does against right-handed starters.

The Cards are hoping that facing Ricky Nolasco might be the cure they've been searching for. Several St. Louis hitters have knocked around Nolasco in the past. Carlos Beltran (16-for-47), Matt Holliday (12-for-26), Jay (7-for-13) and David Freese (6-for-12) are all batting above .300 against him.

Freese was in Tuesday's lineup, despite being removed from Monday's contest because of right-calf tightness.

1. Matt Carpenter, 2B
2. Beltran, RF
3. Holliday, LF
4. Adams, 1B
5. Yadier Molina, C
6. Jay, CF
7. Freese, 3B
8. Descalso, SS
9. Lance Lynn, RHP

The Dodgers' offense didn't exactly break out on Monday night, but after scoring just two runs in 22 innings in St. Louis, their three-run output was certainly a welcomed sight in Game 3.

That same lineup will take the field for Game 4, meaning both Hanley Ramirez (fractured rib) and Andre Ethier (left ankle injury) are in the starting nine. Yasiel Puig, who finally came to life offensively in Monday night's game, going 2-for-3, remains in the No. 6 spot in the order.

Tonight's Dodgers lineup is hitting just .216 vs. Lynn. Leadoff man Carl Crawford (2-for-4) has had the most success against him, although the sample size is very small.

1. Crawford, LF
2. Mark Ellis, 2B
3. Ramirez, SS
4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
5. Ethier, CF
6. Puig, RF
7. Juan Uribe, 3B
8. A.J. Ellis, C
9. Nolasco, RHP
