Winter League roundup: Escogido clinches with no-no

Free-agent reliever Rodney among four pitchers to combine on feat in Dominican

Dominican Winter League

Escogido 6, Licey 0
Escogido clinched a spot in the Dominican Championship Series in style Tuesday night, as four pitchers combined to no-hit Licey. Jon Leicester tossed five innings and walked three, and three relievers -- including free agent Fernando Rodney -- combined to finish off the clincher. At 10-5 in the round-robin playoffs, Leones del Escogido will need one more victory to clinch home-field advantage in the Dominican Series, which they have won in three of the past four seasons. Carlos Santana, Julio Lugo  and Melky Mesa led the way offensively with two hits apiece. Box score

Gigantes 6, Aguilas 2
Gigantes rallied for a pivotal victory, setting up what should be a thrilling finish to the round-robin playoffs. With three contests remaining, just one game separates the three teams chasing the second berth in the Dominican Series. After falling behind early, Gigantes plated six unanswered runs, led by Miami's Marcell Ozuna (2-for-4 with a triple) and Jairo Perez (3-for-4). Gigantes moved into a second-place tie with Licey, while Aguilas dropped to 6-9 and one game back. Box score

Puerto Rican Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente

Carolina 4, Mayaguez 0
With four first-inning runs, Carolina made sure Mayaguez wouldn't get the chance to celebrate Tuesday night. Mayaguez's magic number to advance to the Puerto Rican finals remains at one after veteran Carolina southpaw Willie Collazo tossed a two-hitter. Jesus Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first, helping keep Carolina's slim hopes alive. At 2-7 in the round-robin playoffs, Carolina would need to win out and get some help in order to finish tied for second. Box score

Caguas 1, Ponce 0
Rey Navarro's seventh-inning home run was the only offense, as Caguas notched a crucial win to move into second place in the round-robin playoffs. Blue Jays farmhand Efrain Nieves allowed four hits and struck out seven over 5 2/3, and the bullpen did the rest. Giancarlo Alvarado was the tough-luck loser for Ponce, tossing 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. With three games remaining in the chase for the top two spots, Caguas now leads Ponce by one game. The two clubs are scheduled to meet one last time, on Thursday in Ponce. Box score

Venezuelan Winter League

Caracas 5, Magallanes 3
Bobby Abreu continued his torrid pace in round-robin play, going 2-for-4 with a homer -- his sixth of the playoffs -- to lead Caracas. The win moves Caracas into sole possession of second, 1 1/2 games back of Magallanes and a game ahead of idle Caribes. Yoanner Negrin earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) over five innings, and Yangervis Solarte and Daniel Mayora had two RBIs apiece. Box score

Zulia 10, La Guaira 4
Philadelphia's Freddy Galvis went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs for Zulia. After falling behind in the top of the fourth, Zulia responded by posting seven runs in the bottom of the frame, including a two-RBI single by Galvis. In the eighth, Galvis put the game on ice with a two-run homer, his first of the round-robin playoffs. Box score

Mexican Pacific League

Navojoa 6, Mexicali 4
Jose Chavez hit a two-run game-tying homer in the seventh inning, and Fernando Flores launched the go-ahead blast for Navojoa an inning later. The win gives Navojoa a 2-1 series lead in a best-of-seven semifinal series. Rolando Acosta went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and three Navojoa pitchers combined to limit Mexicali to just four hits. Box score

Los Mochis 6, Hermosillo 3
Reds outfielder Jason Bourgeois went 2-for-4 with a homer, leading Los Mochis in Game 3 of a semifinal series. Bourgeois hit a two-run bomb during the decisive five-run seventh inning for Los Mochis, which now owns a 2-1 series lead. It's the most adversity Hermosillo has faced all season, after winning both the first- and second-half titles and cruising through the first round. Box score
