Earlier this spring, Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez acknowledged he'd like to be a starter this season, and his performance on the mound since then has spoken volumes to support his case.
The 22-year-old fireballer -- who has posted a Grapefruit League ERA of 1.80, while allowing just five hits in 10 innings -- continues his quest for a spot in an already loaded Cardinals rotation when he faces the Twins at 1:05 p.m. ET on MLB.TV.
"He's had a nice spring. He's throwing very well," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "He has a very good approach to what he wants to do. I think he's got a nice mix. He certainly has the arsenal."
Matheny's squad will face Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson, who will be followed by fellow right-hander Samuel Deduno out of the bullpen.
Also on MLB.TV at 1:05 ET, the Phillies take on the Blue Jays as Philadelphia right-hander Kyle Kendrick looks to put his Spring Training struggles behind him. Kendrick has a 7.20 ERA in two Grapefruit League starts, and he has struggled with his control.
Tampa Bay's Mark Lowe and Baltimore's Brian Matusz get the ball on MLB.TV in another 1:05 ET game. Baltimore's No. 2 prospect Kevin Gausman will also pitch, and Nick Markakis, who is hitting .440 with four doubles this spring, will make the trip.
In Cactus League action on MLB.TV, the Angels' Tyler Skaggs should get the chance to face former teammate Adam Eaton when he starts against the White Sox. Eaton and Skaggs played together in the D-backs' system until they were dealt to separate clubs in the same three-way trade.
Three night games are on the MLB.TV docket, starting with Houston and Washington squaring off at 6:05 ET. Both the Astros' Jarred Cosart (7.71 ERA, seven hits, five walks in seven innings) and the Nationals' Taylor Jordan (6.30 ERA, 16 hits in 10 innings) are looking to turn things around.
Then, at 7:05 ET, Boston's Jake Peavy makes his second start of the spring, facing the Pittsburgh Pirates, who will send Wandy Rodriguez to the mound. In the nightcap, Cubs righty Carlos Villanueva continues his quest for a rotation spot against the Rockies.
