Torres, Van Gansen prospering in Padres' system

Torres leads Single-A Lake Elsinore to 7-6 win

Two of the Padres' hottest young prospects, outfielder Nick Torres and shortstop Peter Van Gansen, were drafted by the Padres out of the same college: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Van Gansen, 21, the Padres 12th-round pick in June, is hitting .313 for Tri-City, and Tuesday night he hit a walk-off single to give the Northwest League a win over the Pioneer League in the short-season Single-A All-Star game.

Torres, 22, the Padres fourth-round pick in 2014, is hitting .329 with a .370 on-base percentage this season between low Single-A Fort Wayne and high Single-A Lake Elsinore this season with 39 doubles, three triples, three homers, 57 RBIs and 56 runs scored. Nick Torres was 2-for-5 with two RBIs Tuesday night as high Single-A Lake Elsinore won 7-6 at Inland Empire to snap a seven-game losing streak. The two hits raised Torres' batting average with the Storm to .337.

Shortstop Felipe Blanco (.250) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Left fielder Nick Schulz (.241) was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.

Right-handed starter Matthew Shepherd (3-7, 5.75 ERA) allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings to get the win.

Right-hander Genison Reyes (4.02 ERA) struck out three in two perfect innings. Right-hander Bryan Verbitsky (3.71) walked one with three strikeouts in two otherwise perfect innings to get his first save at high Single-A.

AROUND THE FARM

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (57-54): ALBUQUERQUE 6, Chihuahuas 4 -- 1B Jason Hagerty (.358) was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. 3B Jason Middlebrooks (.333) was 2-for-5 with a run scored. 2B Casey McElroy (.279) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Starting LHP Robbie Erlin (6.14 ERA) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Aaron Northcraft (6.68) allowed two hits and a walk in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. LHP Chris Rearick allowed two hits and two walks with a strikeout in two scoreless innings. RHP Jerry Sullivan (5-2, 3.64) allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. RHP Leonel Campos, who rejoined the Chihuahuas earlier in the day after being optioned from the Padres, allowed two hits in one-third of an inning.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (47-63): Corpus Christi 6, MISSIONS 4 (11 innings) -- Starting RHP Bryan Rodriguez (4.48) allowed one run on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. LHP Eury De La Rosa (2.08) blew the save, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning. RHP Tayron Guerrero (2.76) allowed a hit with a strikeout in two scoreless innings. RHP Cody Hebner (0-1, 2.25) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning to take the loss. LF Tyson Gillies (.259) was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. CF Alberth Martinez (.275) hit his sixth homer with two runs scored in five at-bats. 2B Taylor Lindsey (.195) was 2-for-4.

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (55-52): BURLINGTON 5, TinCaps 0 -- Starting LHP Travis Radke (1-1, 3.94 ERA) allowed five runs on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings as Fort Wayne's seven-game road winning streak ended. RHP Nick Monroe (2.25) allowed a walk with three strikeouts over three hitless, scoreless innings for the Midwest League East Division leaders.

SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A TRI-CITY (26-19): The Dust Devils were off for the Northwest League's All-Star break.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (16-20): ATHLETICS 6, Padres 3 -- LF Jhonatan Pena (.292) was 4-for-4 with his fourth homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. C Kyle Overstreet (.188) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Starting RHP Joel Linares (3-2, 3.63 ERA) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings. RHP Genison Reyes (3.68) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (25-32): Blue Jays 10, PADRES 6 -- C Ricardo Rodriguez (.246) was 2-for-3 with a RBI. 2B Dayon Olmo (.269) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. LF Jose Sotillo (.244) hit his first homer in four at-bats. SS Luis Guzman (.138) was 1-for-2 with two walks, two steals and two runs scored. Starting RHP Jordis Ramos (6.23 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. LHP Eisler Cordova (1-6, 7.61) gave up three runs on five hits and a walk with a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. RHP Diomar Lopez (0.82) gave up a run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in two innings.
