Cano and Hernandez named to American League All-Star team

Cano elected by fans and Hernandez selected by players for Midsummer Classic in Minneapolis.

CHICAGO - Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano and starting pitcher Felix Hernandez have been selected to play for the American League in the 85th All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 15th at Target Field in Minnesota.

Players are still able to be added to the roster due to injuries and pitchers who decide not to pitch. Those announcements will be made by Major League Baseball leading up to the All-Star game.

Hernandez, 28, has been named to his 5th All-Star team, tying Randy Johnson (1990, 1993-95, 1997) for the most by a Mariners pitcher in club history. Johnson is the only Mariners pitcher to start an All-Star game (1995 in Texas & 1997 in Cleveland). Felix has pitched in two of the four previous All-Star games he has been selected to play in, allowing 1 hit in 2.0 scoreless innings.

Cano, 31, was elected by the fans as the starting second baseman, the 5th consecutive Midsummer Classic he will start for the AL. It is Cano's 6th All-Star selection, as he was also selected to play in the 2006 game (did not play). Cano is the first AL second baseman to start 5 consecutive All-Star games since Roberto Alomar (1996-2000). In four previous All-Star games Cano is 1-for-5 with one RBI (sac fly) and was hit by a pitch (first inning last year).
