Capuano likely to be reliever with Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Chris Capuano, who is expected to land in Fort Myers on Friday and undergo a physical, should have his Red Sox uniform on by Saturday's workout.

The completion of the physical is the last hurdle before Capuano officially signs a one-year, $2.25 million deal that offers the Red Sox some added depth in the rotation and bullpen.

"He has experience both starting and pitching out of the bullpen," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "He clearly gives us a depth starter if that need were to arise. At the moment, all things considered, he would pitch out of the bullpen for us."

The Red Sox have Craig Breslow and Andrew Miller already penciled in as lefties in their bullpen. Farrell doesn't think that Capuano's arrival would make too many southpaw relievers.

Though Capuano has the added value of being able to pitch lengthy bullpen stints, Farrell is keeping options open for what his role will be.

"I don't want to limit it," Farrell said. "When he switched to the bullpen last year with the Dodgers, there was very good performance. That's the one thing that's attracted us to him, in addition to the experience as a starter as well if that need were to arise. I'm not looking at naming a role or defining a role at this point."
