Cardinals activate LHP Jaime Garcia from D.L.

Reliever Sam Tuivailala optioned to Memphis (AAA)

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to this afternoon's series finale against the New York Mets that left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia has been activated from the 15-day disabled list (left shoulder) and will make the start today. The team also announced that right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala has been optioned to Memphis (AAA) to make room for Garcia on the 25-man active roster.

Garcia, 28, is making his season debut today, as he returns from neurogenic thoracic outlet surgery that was performed on July 11, 2014.   Garcia made a pair of injury rehabilitation starts earlier this month for Memphis (AAA) and Springfield (AA).   His last Major League appearance came on June 15, 2014 in a win over Washington.

Garcia was 2-1 with a 4.12 ERA in seven starts for the Cardinals last season. He owns a 42-26 career mark with a 3.50 ERA in 106 games (97 starts) since debuting for the Cardinals in 2008. His last full season came in 2011 when he made a career-high 32 start while posting a 13-7 mark for the World Series champions.
