Injured Russell, Yadi out of starting lineups

The Cardinals and Cubs have posted their starting lineups for today's game at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Game 4 of the best-of-five National League Division Series, which Chicago leads 2-1, is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. ET (TBS).

Molina originally in Cards' lineup, then scratched
Yadier Molina, who had to be pulled midway through Game 3 after he aggravated a left thumb injury, was initially in the lineup for Game 4, but then was scratched. He's replaced by Tony Cruz.

Molina has been playing all series with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He is wearing a splint, and is 1-for-8 in the series.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was originally hopeful that Molina could play on Tuesday, but was also realistic.

"As we left last night and the conversation I had with Yadi was let's wait and see how things progress overnight," Matheny said. "[If] some of the treatment or some of the things the doctors were able to do would allow him to be in there, we're most likely going to have Yadier Molina in the lineup. So I went in with the idea that he was penciled in and it was wait-and-see this morning. This morning there was still a considerable weakness in his thumb, so we made a scratch and added Tony Cruz to the lineup."

Second baseman Kolten Wong moves up in the order to bat seventh. Randal Grichuk draws the start in center field, his first at the position since Sept. 9. The Cardinals had been playing Grichuk in right field due to his troubles throwing at full strength. Grichuk has been methodically working his way back from an August elbow injury. He is hardly limited anymore.

The Cardinals' Game 4 lineup includes several players who have had notable success against Hammel, including Jhonny Peralta (9-for-23), Jason Heyward (9-for-18) and Matt Holliday (4-for-11). All eight position players have tallied at least one hit off the Cubs righty.

Baez steps in for Russell
The one notable change for the Cubs is the absence in the lineup of shortstop Addison Russell, who left Monday's Game 3 -- an eventual 8-6 Chicago win -- in the fourth inning due to left hamstring tightness.

Also, manager Joe Maddon has returned to putting the starting pitcher -- in this case, Jason Hammel -- in the eighth spot. Baez will bat ninth.

Russell tripled in the fourth inning of Monday's game and slid head-first into third base. He was removed from the game for pinch-runner Baez, and was to be re-examined on Tuesday. Baez's presence in Tuesday's lineup gives the Cubs four rookies in the lineup again.

Maddon said he wanted to have Baez's glove in the field, but he could make an in-game switch for offense, bringing in Tommy La Stella to play second base and moving Starlin Castro over to shortstop.

"I did not want to walk away from Javi there starting at shortstop. It really came down to that," Maddon said. "I might be wrong, but I chose to do that today."

The rest of the Cubs' batting order is the same as in Game 3, with hot rookie Jorge Soler batting second. Soler has reached base safely in all nine of his plate appearances, and is the first player in Major League history to do that in his first postseason.

Chris Coghlan has a career .421 average in 20 plate appearances vs. Lackey and could have started in the outfield, as he did against Lackey in Game 1. But Maddon simply couldn't take the hot-hitting Soler out of the lineup Tuesday.

The Cubs' Nos. 1-6 batters each homered in Game 3, marking the first time in franchise history that occurred in the same contest.

This will be Hammel's fourth career postseason start. He pitched in relief last year for the Athletics and started games for the Rockies in 2009 and the Orioles in '12.
