Mozeliak: Lyons will start as Garcia, Gonzales recover

ST. LOUIS -- After a weekend in which the Cardinals watched their current fifth starter (Tyler Lyons) pitch in Pittsburgh and two rotation candidates (Marco Gonzales and Jaime Garcia) take the mound in Memphis, Tenn., general manager John Mozeliak stated that Lyons will remain in the Cards' rotation -- for now, at least.

That means that Lyons will pitch next on Saturday, when the Cardinals host the Tigers in an Interleague series. Gonzales and Garcia will each make another start, after which the club's rotation situation will be re-evaluated. While Gonzales remains on the Triple-A roster and will therefore continue to pitch for Memphis, Mozeliak will meet with Garcia on Tuesday to determine the location of his next outing.

"At a minimum, this gives each of them one more start, and I could envision a couple more before we're really at that comfort level," Mozeliak said. "In one regard, someone is coming from higher volume in Garcia's case, but he hasn't had a lot of game opportunities, so we have to be patient with that. And in Marco's case, he just has to get his volume back up. I would expect that to be relatively quick, but we also want to be smart about it."

Garcia threw 72 pitches on Sunday but covered only 2 2/3 innings. Gonzales threw 56 pitches over 2 1/3 innings a day earlier. For Garcia, the outing was his first in a Minor League rehab assignment that followed a stint in extended spring camp in which he built up arm strength. Gonzales had been sidelined since April 20 due to tightness in his left pectoral muscle.

Worth noting

• The availability of center fielder Jon Jay will be a "game-time decision" on Tuesday in Cleveland, Mozeliak said. Jay was unavailable to swing on Sunday due to a bruised left wrist.

• With Matt Carpenter set to rejoin the team and the Cardinals confident Jay's injury won't linger, the club does not anticipate adding another position player to the roster prior to Tuesday's series opener.

• Randal Grichuk tallied two hits in an extended spring game on Monday. It was his first game action since suffering a lower back injury on April 17. Grichuk's first appearance was delayed a few days after his back tightened up on him during his travel to Florida.

• ESPN announced on Monday that it has selected the Cardinals' game at the Dodgers (June 7) for its Sunday night spot. That becomes the Cards' fifth Sunday night telecast already scheduled this season.
