Crew lands Collymore from Cards for Broxton

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers on Friday traded reliever Jonathan Broxton and cash to the Cardinals in Milwaukee's fourth and final trade during the eight days leading to Friday's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

The Brewers received 20-year-old outfielder Malik Collymore for Broxton and sent $3 million to St. Louis to complete the deal. The cash covered $1 million of Broxton's remaining salary this season plus the buyout of his 2016 option.

The Brewers and Cardinals had a series of discussions in recent weeks, some of which included Brewers first baseman Adam Lind. But the sides were never close to striking a deal for Lind, who also has a 2016 option on his contract.

"They came back yesterday and asked if [Broxton] was available," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "We bought down some of his contract to accommodate him to go to St. Louis. Malik Collymore is a young, raw, athletic player."

It marked the second time in three years that the Brewers have sent relief help to the Cardinals at midseason. In August 2013, Milwaukee traded John Axford to St. Louis.

Broxton is earning $9 million this season and is due a $2 million buyout of his $9 million mutual option for 2016. The buyout increased by $1 million and the buyout converted from "club" to "mutual" when the Reds traded Broxton to the Brewers last August.

Broxton, 31, was 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA in 40 games out of the bullpen for the Brewers in his first season with the club. He is 36-32 with a 3.25 ERA lifetime with four clubs, and he reported to Spring Training as the frontrunner to be Milwaukee's closer, but he slipped into a setup role when the club re-signed Francisco Rodriguez.

The Brewers also added two new bullpen arms on Friday. Tyler Thornburg was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs, and Preston Guilmet was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers.
