Tuivailala to join Cardinals' bullpen Tuesday

Prospect returns to staff following Triple-A finale

ST. LOUIS -- With Triple-A Memphis' season coming to an end on Monday, the Cardinals will recall reliever Sam Tuivailala, No. 10 among the club's prospects, according to MLB.com, prior to Tuesday's game against the Cubs. Manager Mike Matheny announced the team's promotion plans after Monday's 9-0 loss.

This will be the fifth promotion of the season for Tuivailala, who was most recently with the Major League team from Aug. 28-30, while Trevor Rosenthal was away on paternity leave. He returned to Memphis for the remainder of its Triple-A schedule and threw a scoreless inning in the Redbirds' 7-3 season-finale victory. Over 43 Triple-A appearances this year, Tuivailala posted a 1.60 ERA and saved 17 games.

With the Cardinals, Tuivailala has made nine straight scoreless appearances since allowing a run in a May 18 outing. His addition will give the Cardinals an 11-man bullpen.

Matheny noted that there are no other planned promotions at this time, meaning that Marco Gonzales and Nick Greenwood -- both of whom were on the Major League roster earlier this month -- are not returning.
