Beltran climbing ranks on All-Star ballot

June 15th, 2016

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran is picking up ground in his quest to represent the Yankees at this summer's All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, while Brian McCann continued to receive support in the third balloting update released on Tuesday by Major League Baseball.
Beltran has jumped to ninth among AL outfielders, having received 463,504 votes. The AL outfield leaders are the Angels' Mike Trout (1,812,731), Jackie Bradley Jr. of the Red Sox (1,322,929) and Lorenzo Cain of the Royals (1,146,885).
Yankees manager Joe Girardi has said that he does not know where his club would be without the 39-year-old Beltran, who entered play on Tuesday with 16 homers after hitting just 19 all of last year. An eight-time All-Star, Beltran has never represented the AL in the Midsummer Classic, earning previous selections with the Astros, Mets and Cardinals.

"If you get selected to be an All-Star, that's great," Beltran said. "I think I've been in those about eight times, and all of them are special. I cannot say there is one more special than the others. I think just the fact that you're being selected to be there and be a part of that special group, that really means a lot."
McCann has tallied 446,697 votes, placing him third among AL catchers behind the Royals' Salvador Perez (2,063,459) and the Orioles' Matt Wieters (672,822).
A seven-time All-Star in the National League during his time with the Braves, McCann is hoping for his first selection to the AL squad. The 32-year-old entered play on Tuesday batting .222 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs in 52 games.
