HOUSTON -- Carlos Correa made his rookie debut for the Astros a little more than a year ago, on June 8, 2015.
He already has more home runs as a shortstop than anyone else in the club's 51-year history.
"Obviously, we have one of the best shortstops in the league," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "He has a chance to do a lot of tremendous things and this is just one thing that he's done in his short career."
Correa broke Adam Everett's mark of 35 homers during Houston's 7-2 win over the Angels on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park. His leadoff solo shot to put Houston up, 7-1, in the fifth was the 37th dinger of Correa's young career and his 36th as a shortstop.
Not bad for a guy who turns 22 in September.
"I didn't realize [he broke the record], so congrats to Correa," Hinch said. "Poor Adam Everett. Feel bad for him. Still love him."
It only took Correa 191 games to surpass Everett, who hit his 35th homer in the 635th game of his Astros career, an 8-3 win over the Cardinals on June 2, 2007.
"It means a lot, obviously," Correa said.
The home run is another notch in a solid sophomore campaign for the shortstop. Correa is batting .266 with 94 hits, 21 doubles and 15 home runs this season. He also leads the team in RBIs with 63.
While Correa was happy with the milestone, he said he doesn't expect to slow down anytime soon.
"I want to be able to get a lot more and help the team win games," Correa said. "It's a great accomplishment, I guess, but the focus is to win ballgames. If I can get homers to help my team win the game, I'll take it."
