Carlos Gonzalez placed on bereavement list

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the bereavement list to attend to a death in the family. To take Gonzalez’s spot on the active roster, Colorado has recalled outfielder Charlie Blackmon from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Blackmon (#8) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s Rockies vs. Marlins game at Coors Field (6:10 p.m. MDT). Gonzalez must be on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days.

Blackmon, 26, began 2012 on the Major League disabled list with turf toe in his right foot. After being reinstated from the DL and optioned on 4/14, he has spent the remainder of the season in the Minor Leagues. In 76 games between Triple-A Colorado Springs and Short-Season Tri-City (rehab assignment at Tri-City), Blackmon has hit .289 (63-for-287) with 23 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 37 RBI and 63 runs in 76 games. At Triple-A, Blackmon has batted .303 (69-for-228) with 18 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs, 34 RBI and 55 runs in 59 games. The left-handed hitter and thrower made his Major League debut with Colorado in 2011, appearing in 27 games. He batted .255 (25-for-98) with 1 double, 1 home run, 8 RBI and 9 runs in his first taste of the Majors in 2011. Blackmon was originally drafted by Colorado in the second round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Gonzalez, 26, was named to his first career National League All-Star team in 2012. In 108 games this season, Gonzalez is batting .320 (137-for-428) with 25 doubles, 5 triples, 20 home runs, 79 RBI and 78 runs scored. He ranks among the top-10 of NL players in batting average, RBI, runs, hits, slugging percentage (.542) and on-base percentage (.389) this season. In 554 career Major League games with Colorado (2009-12) and Oakland (2008), Gonzalez is a career .303 (628-for-2,076) hitter with 122 doubles, 25 triples, 97 home runs, 343 RBI, 365 runs and 82 stolen bases.

The Rockies have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
