Mariners Outfielder Mike Carp recalled from rehab assignment, activated from Disabled List; Catcher Miguel Olivo placed on 15-Day DL

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today that outfielder Mike Carp, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right shoulder since March 29, has been recalled from his rehabilitation assignment at AAA Tacoma, and activated from the 15-day disabled list. Catcher Miguel Olivo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Carp, 25, will be in uniform (#20) and available for today's (4:10 PT) game at the Tampa Bay Rays.

Carp began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on April 13. In 13 games with the Rainiers, Carp hit .137 (7-for-51) with 2 doubles and 4 RBI.

Carp was diagnosed with a sprained right shoulder on March 29. He suffered the injury diving for a Kurt Suzuki double in the fourth inning on March 28 in the Japan Opening Series against Oakland. Carp remained in the game and was examined after the game.

In 2011 Carp was selected by MLB.com as Mariners Breakout Player of the Year, was named to Baseball America's All-Rookie team, along with Dustin Ackley and was listed amongst AL rookie leaders in several offensive categories including Grand Slams (1, T1st), Slugging (.466, 2nd), Batting Average (.276, 4th), RBI (46, 4th), Home Runs (12, T4th), Extra Base Hits (30, 6th) and On-base Percentage (.326, 6th). He appeared in 79 games at 4 positions: 1B - 34 G/30 GS, LF - 27 G/26 GS, DH - 19 G/GS, RF - 1 G/0 GS.

Olivo, 33, was injured in the 9th inning of last night's 3-2 loss at Tampa Bay, fielding a ball between the mound and home plate. He was in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak during which he batted .333 (11-for-33) with 3 home runs (including one last night) and 4 RBI.

For the season, Olivo was hitting .210 (17-for-81) with 2 doubles, 4 homers and 7 RBI. He had started 19 of the teams first 24 games behind the plate.
