Capps, Stanton progressing in injury rehab

MIAMI -- Marlins right-handed reliever Carter Capps threw his first bullpen session on Tuesday afternoon since heading to the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 3.

Capps -- who was placed on the DL with a right elbow strain after experiencing discomfort in an Aug. 2 outing -- said the session went well. Manager Dan Jennings reported the same, standing by his belief that the Miami setup man will be back once his 15 days are complete.

"[Pitching coach Chuck Hernandez] was pleased, and I saw him throw flat ground and it looked good," Jennings said. "The ball was coming out nice. It's good to see."

Jennings added that Capps will throw another bullpen session and, if all goes as planned, he will soon begin a rehab stint with Class A Advanced Jupiter. In 31 innings this season, Capps is 1-0 with a 1.16 ERA.

Meanwhile, Jennings also reported that injured outfielder Giancarlo Stanton -- on the 15-day DL since June 27 with a broken bone in his left hand -- is making strides, although he's still not ready to face live pitching.

"He's progressing nice," Jennings said. "He'll continue to do baseball activities. It's just about when he gets the strength back in that hand and wrist. He has been in the cages and it feels good. He's starting to feel some strength come back."

Stanton was hitting .265 with 27 home runs and 67 RBIs at the time of the injury.
