Castro named to 2013 AL All-Star squad

Catcher becomes the first Astros American League All-Star

ARLINGTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced today that Astros catcher Jason Castro has been named to the 2013 American League All-Star team as a reserve. The A.L. and National League starters and reserves were announced today during a telecast on FOX.

Castro, 26, is hitting .269 (74x275) with 23 doubles, 11 home runs, 28 RBI and a .331 on-base percentage in 75 games entering tonight's contest. He currently leads all AL catchers in extra-base hits with 34, and ranks tied for seventh among all AL players in doubles. Among AL backstops, Castro ranks first in slugging (.473), second in doubles, tied for second in homers, third in OPS (.804) and sixth in hits.

While Castro will be making his first career Major League All-Star appearance, he will also become the Astros first American League All-Star. He also is the second Astros catcher to make an All-Star team in franchise history, joining Craig Biggio (1989, 1991).

Castro was originally a first-round pick by Houston in the June 2008 Draft and was the 10th player selected overall that season.

The 2013 MLB All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m. (CT) at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.
