NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia and his wife, Amber, were recognized by the Yankees prior to Saturday's 3-2 win against the Rays, highlighting the PitCCh In Foundation's recent initiative to renovate a baseball field at Claremont Park in the Bronx.
Joined by Sabathia's mother, Margie, the couple thanked partners involved with the project, which cost approximately $500,000. The refurbished diamond at the corner of Clay and Webster Avenues now features an irrigation and sprinkler system, fencing, dugouts and lighting.
Partners involved with the Claremont Park project included members from the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, the Yankees, NYPD 44th Precinct and Roc Nation.
In the summer of 2014, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation provided the foundation with a list of the 10 worst fields in the Bronx. They were all visited, with the Sabathias selecting the Claremont Park diamond.
Yankees head groundskeeper Dan Cunningham provided special advisement and recommendations during the project. The Foundation dedicated the field renovation to the Rolando Paulino Little League, which was represented by board member Emily Rufino and Little League players Justin Zapata and Elias Barcacel.
Following Saturday's game, the Sabathias are scheduled to again visit Claremont Park for the official ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the entire Rolando Paulino Little League. Five-hundred children, primarily Bronx residents, participate in the league from ages 3-17.
