ANAHEIM -- The Yankees have likely lost left-hander Carsten Sabathia for an undetermined period of time with a strained left hamstring, manager Joe Girardi said after his club's 3-2 loss to the Angels in 11 innings on Tuesday night.
Sabathia came out of the game at Angel Stadium after four innings when he felt the hamstring grab on the second to last pitch he threw to Angels catcher Martin Maldonado, who was batting when Gary Sanchez caught C.J. Cron stealing for the third out of the fourth. He was replaced by right-hander Giovanny Gallegos, the first of six relievers Girardi had to use in the extended game.
"It's an issue," Girardi said of Sabathia's injury. "Obviously he's going to have to have an MRI and we'll get a timetable for it. But I anticipate it's a DL."
Sabathia said he will undergo the MRI exam here on Wednesday before the teams close the three-game series.

The surprising 38-24 Yankees have weathered injuries this year, the most notable to closer Albertin Chapman, who is nearing activation from the DL after a month out because of inflammation in his left shoulder. But the starting rotation thus far had been stable.
"We've had some losses this year and some guys have stepped up," Girardi said. "So, we're going to have to have somebody step up in his absence. It's not what you want because he is throwing the ball so well. And he was throwing the ball great tonight. Somebody's going to have to step up."
Sabathia had sailed through the first four innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits. He walked one and struck out four and left with the score tied, 1-1. 
"It felt like it just grabbed at first," Sabathia said. "I don't think I heard a pop or anything like that. I thought I might be fine, but I went to throw the next pitch and couldn't."
Sabathia, at 7-2 with a 3.66 ERA had been experiencing a renaissance season. He had won his last five starts, allowing just five runs during that span. He was coming off eight innings of scoreless, five-hit ball on Wednesday night in an 8-0 victory over the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
"Yeah, this stinks," Sabathia said. "You want to be out there with the guys. You just feel bad about it. It's a tough situation."
It's been a tough last four seasons for the now 36-year-old Sabathia, who's in the final year of a six-year $122 million contract. He has had groin, knee and elbow injuries. And his 2013 season ended in late September with a Grade 2 strain of the left hamstring.
Those type of injuries are graded one to four with one the mildest.
Sabathia said he couldn't remember that injury enough to make a comparison. All he knew was that his leg was still sore as he answered questions at his locker after the game. There was no way of gauging at the moment the severity of the injury.
"It's sore. That's all I can say about it," he said. "Hopefully I'll wake tomorrow morning and it will be better."
