Fatigued arm lands Anderson on disabled list

PHOENIX -- The D-backs placed struggling starter Chase Anderson on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with right triceps inflammation.

Arizona also optioned reliever Enrique Burgos to Triple-A Reno and recalled outfielder Danny Dorn and reliever Matt Stites from Reno.

Anderson has been struggling with elevating his pitches and has been unable to find the form that made him so successful early in the season. Over his last five starts, the right-hander is 1-3 with a 9.12 ERA.

That stretch includes Saturday night's 8-4 loss to the Giants, when Anderson gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

"I'm just a little fatigued in that area," Anderson said. "I like to grind through things and never make excuses, but I'm sure it was [having an effect] a little bit. Most of all, you still have to execute pitches when you have to execute pitches. But I think it'll be good to take some time off."

Anderson (4-4, 4.37 ERA) said the initial plan is for him to take a week off before throwing again. The D-backs will need a starter for Thursday's game against the Brewers, whether that comes from a pitcher currently in the Minors or a spot start from long reliever Josh Collmenter.

D-backs manager Chip Hale said Anderson will undergo a series of tests to make sure the inflammation isn't anything more serious, but Anderson was optimistic that rest will alleviate the issue.

"This is the first time I've ever pitched this many innings consecutive in a season. It's part of the grind and something to learn from," Anderson said.

Burgos was 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA in 22 appearances for the D-backs this season. He has struggled of late with fastball command, giving up four runs over one inning in his last two appearances.

The D-backs needed a fresh arm in their bullpen for Sunday's series finale after using every reliever in the first two games of the series. That void was filled by Stites, who has pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in two appearances for the D-backs this season.

The D-backs added a fifth player to their bench in Dorn, who has batted .172 with three RBIs in 22 games this season.
