Hale to remain part of A's coaching staff

OAKLAND -- Managerial prospect Chip Hale is staying put for now.

Hale, regarded in baseball circles as a manager in the making, is set to return to Oakland as bench coach for the 2014 season, his agent said Tuesday.

Hale was one of five finalists for the Mariners' managerial job, ultimately given to Lloyd McClendon last week. He also interviewed with Seattle in 2008, when the Mariners hired former A's coach Don Wakamatsu, and has been a contender for several other openings in recent years.

But Hale will remain in Oakland with longtime friend and A's manager Bob Melvin, with whom he also worked in Arizona, to fulfill the final year of his contract.

Melvin told MLB.com on Tuesday that he plans to bring back all of his other coaches, including pitching coach Curt Young and hitting coach Chili Davis, who has also been speculated as a future manager.

Also expected back are first-base coach Tye Waller, third-base coach Mike Gallego and bullpen coach Darren Bush.
