MIAMI -- Prior to Monday's game with the Marlins, Rays ace Chris Archer and manager Kevin Cash both addressed comments made by Blue Jays manager John Gibbons regarding Archer on Sunday.
In the aftermath of Tampa Bay's 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto, Gibbons suggested that Archer should be suspended after throwing a pitch behind Toronto's Jose Bautista in the first inning. Gibbons used an incident that took place between the Red Sox and Orioles last week as his precedent. Unsurprisingly, Archer and Cash did not agree.
"I appreciate those thoughts," Cash said. "I don't think he should be suspended."

Archer did not feel he should -- or would -- be suspended either.
"I saw [Gibbons'] comments, and I understand where he's coming from, but these circumstances are totally, totally different, in my opinion," Archer said.
Archer added: "No, I'm not going to be suspended."
The right-hander was asked if he thought Gibbons' comments were motivated by the fact Archer's next start will be Friday night in St. Petersburg against the Blue Jays.
"I don't know, I have no clue," Archer said. "He may have been genuine, but there is so much more behind the other situation. This was honestly just one pitch got away. The other situation, it was seven or eight pitches at the dude's head. Totally, totally different situation."

Boston reliever Matt Barnes was suspended four games for throwing a pitch near the head of Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado, who had injured Dustin Pedroia on a slide into second base earlier in their series.
"I would expect there has got to be some kind of suspension [by Major League Baseball]," Gibbons said. "The way they handle things now, the Machado thing the other day, the ball was thrown behind him. Now, if the umpire had not issued a warning, OK, maybe he didn't think something was wrong. Since he issued a warning, maybe he [thinks], 'Ah, something's not right here.'"
