Crush in midst of timely power surge

BALTIMORE -- As the Orioles push forward to Friday's non-waiver Trade Deadline trying to improve their club enough to get back into the postseason, Tuesday offered another reason why Baltimore has a chance to be in October. And Chris Davis was right at the heart of it.

Davis homered twice off Braves starter Julio Teheran, tying a career high with five RBIs to highlight Baltimore's 7-3 series win over Atlanta, its fourth consecutive victory.

"We really need it," starter Ubaldo Jimenez said of Davis' hot stretch, which includes five homers and 12 RBIs over his last seven games. "When he is on, it makes a difference in the whole lineup. All the pitchers, they know they are going to be in trouble every time that they are facing him because he can hit anything out. He is so strong, and when he is on he is going to be hitting home runs all over."

With the O's down 2-0 before they got to hit, Davis gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish, driving Teheran's 1-0 fastball into right-center field for a three-run shot. He repeated the feat in his next at-bat, blasting a 2-2 fastball into the right-field seats.

"It's obviously high," Davis said of his confidence at the plate right now. "I talked a little bit about it earlier about slowing down and being a little bit more selective, a little bit more patient. I think that's really been big for me the last few weeks, not trying to go out there and do too much, just trying to put a good swing on the ball."

Tuesday marked Davis' 10th career multi-homer game -- and his third of the season -- and was the 10th time in his last 11 games that he's hit safely. Over that stretch, Davis is batting .302/.375/.698.

"I was as happy, if you look at him involved in runs tonight, the catch that Chris made," manager Buck Showalter said, referring to Davis' leaping catch on the right-field warning track in the eighth. "You can add those runs on, too. Chris obviously had a big night offensively, but it's very hard to expect that type of production every night. Very quietly he snuck up on... He's in the top five or 10 in RBIs in the American League. Very quietly he's grinding out another solid year for us."
