Davis' monster year leads O's field for GIBBYs

First baseman lands three of club's eight nominations; Machado up for two

BALTIMORE -- Award season is in full swing, and the Orioles -- who tied for the most in baseball with three 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove winners -- were well represented on the Greatness In Baseball Yearly (GIBBYs) ballot with a handful of players getting recognition for outstanding seasons.

Chris Davis, who made his mark on baseball's history books with 53 homers, is up for MVP and is also a candidate for breakout hitter and best hitter, competing with teammate Adam Jones for the latter. Right-hander Chris Tillman was nominated for breakout pitcher and Darren O'Day got the nod in the setup man category.

Manny Machado, who became the first Orioles third baseman to win a Gold Glove since Brooks Robinson in 1975, is nominated for defensive player. Additionally, his amazing backhand stop and throw from foul ground against the Yankees is up for Play of the Year.

Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2013 GIBBY trophies -- the ultimate honors of the industry's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 22 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic, regular-season moment and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

In the past five years, fans have cast more than 50 million votes across the various GIBBY categories, none of which was restricted to individual League affiliation. Fans can vote through Dec. 1.

Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.

Davis is up against the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera and the Angels' Mike Trout in GIBBY MVP voting after posting a .286/.370/.634 line in a breakout season. Jones, who won his third Gold Glove this season, set a career-high with 33 homers and 108 RBIs and is in for some tough competition in the hitter category. In addition to the trio listed above, New York's Robinson Cano, Boston's David Ortiz and Texas' Adrian Beltre are among those up for the top hitter GIBBY.

Tillman established himself as the Orioles' ace and went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 games while O'Day consistently was the O's best reliever, going 5-3 with a 2.18 ERA in 68 appearances.
