D-backs take series from Reds with walk-off

PHOENIX -- Chris Owings delivered his first career walk-off hit with an RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the D-backs to a 4-3 win over the Reds on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The D-backs also captured the series win, taking two of three games.

"I went up there all day and felt like I had a good approach, hit some balls hard," Owings said. "It kind of lined up there right at the end and that's how it works out. I got a good pitch to hit."

Paul Goldschmidt led off the 10th with a walk, his fourth time on base, and David Peralta followed with a single, his fifth hit. After a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and an intentional walk to Jake Lamb, Owings blasted the game-winning knock to straightaway center off of Reds reliever Ryan Mattheus.

Both starting pitchers turned in quality outings. D-backs starter Patrick Corbin and Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani each allowed three runs over six innings and did not factor in the decision.

There was some confusion after the walk-off, as the Reds noticed that Peralta hadn't touched third base and Jake Lamb hadn't touched second base. Reds manager Bryan Price brought the entire matter to the attention of the umpires, but according to the Official Baseball Rules book, the game was over when Goldschmidt touched home and Owings touched first.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Goldy gets back to normal: Goldschmidt helped the D-backs score a run in the first inning, the third game in a row they struck in the opening frame. After A.J. Pollock singled and stole second, Goldschmidt ripped an RBI double to left. He doubled again in the third and singled in the fifth. Entering Sunday, Goldschmidt was 3-for-27 with no extra-base hits in August.

"You're always working on stuff to get your swing where it needs to be," Goldschmidt said. "Good to get a few hits today and that's just how baseball is, sometimes you have some bad days or weeks or months or years or whatever. It just kind of comes and goes so I just go out there and try to do the best I can."

Frazier sits, Byrd acquits: Marlon Byrd replaced Todd Frazier in the cleanup spot on Sunday and promptly ignited a fourth-inning Reds rally, driving in the first run in a two-run inning with a single. Frazier was rested after going 1-for-8 with a single and four K's in the first two games of the series.

Peralta provides protection: The D-backs have struggled at times this season to find a suitable No. 4 hitter to bat behind Goldschmidt. Peralta has filled that role nicely of late, as he collected a career-high five hits including a game-tying RBI double in the fifth. He singled in the first, third, eighth, and 10th innings. "Goldy, he's the guy, so we have to protect him," Peralta said. "They don't want to face him so I have to try to step up and do some damage."

Frazier redux: Ivan De Jesus Jr., who was spotted into the game to play third base, doubled in the tying run and made it 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Frazier pinch-hit later in the inning with De Jesus on second and whiffed looking against D-backs reliever David Hernandez, brought in specifically to face him in a righty-righty matchup.

DeSclafani didn't have his very best stuff, but he gave us six innings of three-run baseball and the bullpen was pretty locked down until the 10th. WHAT'S NEXT
Reds: The Reds move on from Arizona to continue their 10-game western swing with the opener of a three-game series against the Padres at Petco Park in a 10:10 p.m. ET start. The rookie parade continues with left-hander David Holmberg (1-0, 3.27) slated to face San Diego right-hander Ian Kennedy (6-10, 4.49).

D-backs: The D-backs continue their homestand with a three-game series against the Phillies that begins on Monday at 6:40 MT. Rubby De La Rosa (9-5, 4.56) takes the mound in the opener looking to keep his recent run of success going. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA over his last four starts.
