Young delivers another gutsy start for Royals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Again, Royals right-hander Chris Young put his focus on baseball, though with a heavy heart.

And again, Young came through -- firing 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball in the Royals' 3-1 win over the Twins on Friday night at Target Field.

On Saturday night, Young will fly back to Dallas, and on Monday, he will attend his father's funeral services. His father passed away last weekend.

"I'm just trying to get through the last week," Young said. "It's been an emotional roller coaster for me. If I get through Monday, maybe I'll get some more excitement [about the playoffs]."

Last Sunday, a day after his dad died, Young threw five no-hit innings against the Indians.

Royals manager Ned Yost isn't revealing who his fourth starter for the postseason is yet. It's between Young and Medlen.

"I've already made my decision," Yost said. "It's all going to be good. We're going to have balance, depth."

Yost once again was thoroughly impressed by Young's outing. Young was supposed to be on an 85-pitch limit. But Young came back out for the seventh even though he had surpassed that limit.

"I needed to steal a few outs," Yost said. "He had given up four hits and was pitching great. It was like, 'You feeling good?' 'Yeah, good.' 'OK.'

"I liked everything. He competes out there. He used all his pitches."

Young had no issue with coming out for the seventh.

"I just felt like I would give them what I had and whatever he needed," Young said. "It's a great win for the team."
